Team: Mega-corporations like Norfolk Southern and CSX need to be held accountable and keep our community safe. Period.
After the horrific Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, I took immediate action, calling on CSX, the Hudson Valley’s freight carrier, to take proactive action to prevent a tragedy like this from happening on the banks of the Hudson River or in our communities.
As many as five trains carrying highly explosive materials travel through our district daily on rail lines owned and maintained by CSX. We need increased safety protocols and standards, as well as federal monitoring, to make sure another disaster does not occur. The railroad industry is raking in profits. The money it would cost to make our rail lines safer is simply a mathematical rounding error for these mega-corporations.
There’s no excuse not to get it done.
If you agree with me, join me in calling on them to implement safer standards today.
There are common sense steps and safety measures CSX and other train companies can implement to reduce risks, like having engineers on trains and notifying local officials when toxic chemicals are passing through an area. I’m committed to that work on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. I will not allow a preventable disaster to put our families at risk. CSX must apply common sense safety regulations immediately.
I will continue to fight to keep our community safe, and I’m hoping you’ll join me in calling on them to act quickly to implement safer standards quickly.
Thank you for signing on.
Yours in service,
Pat
