Fifty-eight years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, and countless other brave men and women put their lives on the line to win the right to vote by marching from Selma, Alabama to the state capital. And later that year, they won passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

But over time, extremists have ramped up an all-out assault on voting rights. In the months after the January 6 insurrection, Republicans introduced over 400 voter suppression bills in 49 state legislatures, and dark-money groups spent tens of millions of dollars promoting them.

And they're not being quiet about it. A Republican member of the Wisconsin Election Commission, Robert Spindell, recently bragged about reducing turnout among Black and Hispanic voters in Milwaukee in the 2022 election.

Our democracy is under siege, and it's time to fight back.

The Freedom to Vote Act would have defended and expanded voting rights for all Americans, reduced the influence of money in politics, prevented politicians from picking their voters through gerrymandering, and created new ethics rules to hold officeholders to a higher standard. But Republicans blocked this critical bill and others in the last Congress.
