John: another anti-trans bill is set to pass in West Virginia: this one would ban gender-affirming care in the state. Just last year, West Virginia also banned trans kids from playing sports.
Right now, there's only one out LGBTQ+ person serving in the West Virginia legislature, and she's hard at work making her voice heard. Delegate Danielle Walker has been leading protests at the state capital to stand with the trans community and push back against these horrific bills. Today, we're going to let Delegate Walker know we're with her: add your name and leave her a note today!
Although Delegate Walker's historic 2018 election was a moment of pride and celebration, being a Black lawmaker in a majority-white state means she has dealt with threats of violence, white supremacy and prejudice. After she introduced a bill protecting abortion in West Virginia, she was targeted by racists who posted her name with pictures of the Klu Klux Klan and also received assassination threats.
But she bravely continues to stand up for what's right. As she said herself, "When I take that oath … it doesn’t say that I just only represent the people in my district. I represent every person who is within the borders of West Virginia whether they can vote, whether they have an address or not, whether they are passing through or not. Y’all means all." We're so proud of the work Delegate Walker is doing to protect LGBTQ+ lives in West Virginia, and we want her to know we've got her back. Add your name and let her know you're cheering her on today!
Thanks for standing with her,
Albert Fujii
