MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS January 21 - January 27, 2020 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch The Missile Defense Mondays Video On Saturday, January 18, a suspected Houthi missile strike killed 116 people in Yemen. The missile struck a mosque at the al-Estiqbal military camp in Marib. Soldiers had gathered to the mosque for evening prayers before the strike. On Wednesday, it was reported the Pentagon will ‘likely’ deploy Patriot missile defense systems to Iraq. This comes in the aftermath of Iran’s missile attack earlier this month on two bases in Iraq housing U.S. service members. The Pentagon has now stated 34 American troops suffered concussions during the missile attack. Also on Wednesday, the Missile Defense Agency announced a 4th possible location for the $1.9 billion Homeland Defense Radar-Hawaii. The Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), on the island of Kauai, is now a possible location for the radar. MDA expects to pick a suitable site in March or April of this year. On Sunday, three mortars struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Iraq. Initial reports stated Katyusha rockets were launched at the compound but recent reports reference a U.S. official stated mortars were used in the attack. One mortar struck the dining area of the compound that left one individual with minor injuries. Also on Sunday, it was reported vehicle activity had been observed in recent satellite imagery of North Korea’s Sanumdong missile research center near Pyongyang. The report referenced U.S. officials that stated these activities are consistent with previous missile tests and North Korea could be preparing for a missile or engine test. The officials also stated there is no indication of an imminent test launch. Click here to read all of the headlines from the week.
