Nurses file charges against GW University Hospital
The District of Columbia Nurses Association (DCNA) has filed unfair labor practices charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), accusing The George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) of committing numerous violations of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). The NLRA protects the right of employees to engage in organizing activities for the purpose of forming a union, and prohibits managers from spying on or retaliating against employees suspected of engaging in union activity. As [link removed] previously reported, within hours of the union petition being filed last week, GWUH suspended RN Angelo Estrellas, claiming that he was involved in the union organizing campaign. DCNA also alleges that GWUH leadership disclosed to staff that it is taking additional measures in an effort to identify union organizers and thwart organizing efforts. Despite continued intimidation and threats of retaliation by hospital management, DCNA says "the nurses remain committed to their efforts," noting that this type of behavior further demonstrates their need for union representation. "Stop dirty banks!" seniors demand
DC-area seniors - including many from the labor movement -- will march, rally and demonstrate at four major banks in downtown DC today (see Calendar) as part of a national day of action across the US to pressure the banks to stop financing the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. The local actions are among more than 100 events in over half the U.S. states taking place across the country. The day, which will culminate in a rocking chair blockade, is being organized by Third Act, a group for climate activists over 60 years, with more than 50 local and national partners. Featured are Bill McKibben of Third Act, Ben Jealous of the Sierra Club, Climate Scientist Rose Abramoff, Retired DC Labor Council President Joslyn Williams, and music by the DC Labor Chorus and Joe Uehlein & The U-Liners. In Eswatini, where union workers are routinely harassed, attacked and even killed for going on strike or holding rallies, union leader Sticks Nkambule was forced to flee the southern African country after leading transport workers on a strike. On the latest [link removed] Solidarity Center Podcast, Nkambule describes the interconnected struggle for worker rights, human rights and democracy. "We led several job stay-aways and the response by the regime has been to unleash its army and firing live bullets and the streets painted red with blood.
