Right Side of History

Folks,

There’s a whole host of nonsensical and downright cruel policy positions the Alabama GOP has adopted over the years. But the one I struggle to wrap my head around the most is why they refuse to expand Medicaid in the state. Y’all know I’ve been a big supporter of Medicaid expansion in Alabama. It doesn't make any sense not to.

You can help in Montgomery tomorrow, March 21st at 11 AM, an alliance of more than 120 advocacy groups will be rallying on the state capitol steps to support Medicaid expansion. Folks, if you’re able, I urge you to join this important rally.

Our state healthcare system needs Medicaid expansion. Rural hospitals are underfunded and closing. We’ve got a huge gap of nearly 300,000 Alabamians who don’t qualify for government health insurance but would benefit from subsidized health care. Our health outcomes consistently rank low nationwide.

The Alabama state legislature has the funds to help fix these problems. But we need to apply the public pressure and make them do it.

This should not be a partisan issue. I’ve seen voters in states across the country – regardless of which party’s in power – speak up and vote for expansion. Now, I know Alabama does not have a referendum process to force the issue. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have a voice here.

That’s why I’m asking you to head to the capitol building tomorrow and make sure to tell your family and friends to go too. If you’re unable to attend, send a word of support on social media. Every bit of public pressure counts. Check out the link here for more information.

We’re talking about improving health outcomes for hundreds of thousands of Alabamaians. We need to do our part.

-Doug
