Congratulations to Cathy for quickly identifying Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) and thank you to Cathy for adding the following to your answer: “Also known as black bugbane, black snakeroot, rattle-top, or fairy candle, it is a species of flowering plant of the family Ranunculaceae. It is native to eastern North America from the extreme south of Ontario to central Georgia, and west to Missouri and Arkansas.” According to Virginia Native Plant Society, this plant is rhizomatous. In botany and dendrology, a rhizome is a modified subterranean plant stem that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes. Rhizomes are also called creeping rootstalks or just rootstalks.
