Today the Boundary Waters received a rare International Wilderness Award from Quiet Parks International in recognition of the Boundary Waters’ natural sound-scape which is largely free from industrial noise intrusions - a true rarity in the world today.

This is why we must permanently protect this unique ecosystem from the massive, irreversible harm that would result if sulfide-ore mining were permitted in its watershed. If we miss this chance to protect the Boundary Waters, we could lose one of the most important wild natural habitats on earth, one of only a handful of the quietest places on earth.

Last week we were contacted by a long-time Boundary Waters supporter who was so fired up about our work to protect the Wilderness that they decided to put forward a generous gift of $50,000 in matching gift funds until March 31!

This award recognizes what millions of visitors have experienced in the Boundary Waters - the healing, quiet solitude of nature that is so hard to find anywhere else. Turning the edge of the Wilderness into an industrial mining zone would mean that noises of drilling, blasting, machinery, heavy traffic and more would drown out the natural sounds of our northwoods.
