My name is Madiha. In case we haven't met yet, I am a global communications officer with the IRC, where I cover conflict and crisis throughout the Middle East and across Africa. Tonight and for the rest of the next month or so, I will join millions of people around the world (and thousands of IRC staff, donors and supporters!) in observing the holy month of Ramadan.

If you're not familiar with Ramadan, it is a time when millions of people observe a season of contemplation, generosity and spiritual practices such as fasting. We also come together with loved ones in the evenings to worship and share a meal as we break our daily fast. I have so many cherished memories of these moments that I turn back to every year — I imagine that many of us who observe Ramadan share these experiences.

But this year, my heart is heavy for people in countries like Syria, Türkiye, Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan where observing Ramadan will be especially challenging. For many of these families, the spiritual practice of fasting will take on a new meaning because they don't know where their next meal will come from.

Millions of Muslims are dealing with the aftermath of the tragic earthquake in Syria and Türkiye, are in the midst of conflict in Yemen, or are picking up the pieces after extreme flooding in Pakistan wiped away their homes and livelihood.

Because of generous contributions from supporters like you, the IRC is helping bring hope and support to families during this special time of year. We're bringing food and financial support to people who don't have enough to eat. We're providing safe places for children and families to gather.

For families forced to resettle away from home, the IRC provides programming and culturally appropriate food to help them observe Ramadan in an unfamiliar place. We also provide resources for local schools and other institutions so that they can better support resettled families throughout the month.

Whether you observe Ramadan yourself or want to stand in solidarity with people who do, I hope you'll join me and the IRC in partaking in the generous spirit of the month.
