As House Republicans prepare to release a budget that will undermine Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security Works and our allies took the fight to Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s back yard this weekend. When McCarthy checked his local paper on Saturday, this was on the front page:¹

The plan McCarthy’s Republicans will be releasing this week is likely to include huge cuts to Social Security’s administrative budget, which would lead to closed Social Security offices, longer lines, and shorter hours. McCarthy will claim that these are not cuts―but what else would you call building barriers between Americans and the benefits they earned through a lifetime of work?

Now that Republicans have the media believing that they’re not targeting Social Security and Medicare, our job is harder. They have continued to put raising the retirement age on the table, claiming that that isn’t a cut. Now, they’re trying to cut the funding that has allowed Social Security to pay benefits in full and on time for nearly a century. These are direct attacks on our Social Security system―and they’re happening now.

We’re keeping the pressure on Speaker McCarthy―we even sent Social Security Works PAC President Jon “Bowzer” Bauman to rally the hundreds gathered in McCarthy’s district. Let this be a warning to any politician who seeks to cut our Social Security system: We are watching, and we are ready to fight back.
