Hey John,
We say a lot about how important local elections are, but every day Run For Something alums are showing you. Here’s just a snapshot of what they’ve been up to:
- In Los Angeles, renters in California have increasingly felt priced out of homeownership and watched as the L.A. City Council did little to meaningfully take action. Now Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez and County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath are speaking up and working to balance the scales for their fellow renters.
-
State Senator John Fredrickson is working hard to expand protections for LGBTQIA+ Nebraskans, all while trying to stop proposals that would restrict what bathrooms transgender youths could use and which athletic teams they participate in.
- In Allegheny County, PA, County Council Member Tom Duerr introduced a bill that would cap campaign contributions for county offices with support from fellow alum County Council Member Bethany Hallam. If successful, this bill would level the playing field by stopping special interest groups from funneling unlimited funds to candidates.
- Finally, in Ann Arbor, MI, City Council Members Ayesha Ghazi Edwin and Travis Radina led the city council to an 8-0 vote to update the city’s non-discrimination ordinance to prohibit discrimination based on the type of government-issued IDs city residents use. This long-awaited change followed a 2018 study showing that Black and Latinx residents were having their valid county IDs rejected at a higher rate than White residents. We’re so proud of this meaningful change!
