Dear Friend,

?

On May 1, DC tenants in rent controlled buildings could face the highest rent increase in the 30+ year history of the program. The only way to protect renters from these increases is for the DC Council to act now and pass emergency legislation to protect them.

?

The clock is ticking, but the new chair of the Housing Committee - Councilmember Robert White - has made no plans to protect tenants. Tomorrow, we're calling him and asking him to lead.?

When you sign up today, you'll get a text tomorrow reminding you to call, and sending you the script.?

?

The increases tenants face this year are the result of two problems with our current rent control. The first issue is that renters can be forced to pay 2% more than the cost of inflation. So while DC's minimum wage will only go up 6.9% this year, housing costs can go up 8.9%. This takes place year over year, compounding?the burden on tenants, and forcing tenants to pay even more of their money to landlords while food, gas, and other basics increase. Additionally, the cap for total annual increases is 10% for most tenants. We're calling on the Council to immediately and permanently fix these problems and protect tenants now and in the future. Sign up today!

?

In solidarity,?
