John,
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War.
I am the proud father of an Iraq War veteran, and this week I will be thinking a lot about him, his unit, and those he served with.
Most of us can say we know someone who served in Iraq. The war touched all Americans in one way or another, but it especially affected those who fought and their families. Even after the tours and the combat are over, the long effects of war don’t fully go away.
Much of what we as a country talk about this week will be the failings of leadership in the Iraq War. Its ramifications have been severe and will be seen for decades to come.
But those mistakes don’t undermine the heroism and courage of those who served. Though they didn’t always know or understand the mission, Iraq War veterans answered the call to serve their country all the same. They proved the American spirit of dedication to freedom is alive and well.
That is something for all of us to remember.
We’ll be recognizing the start of the Iraq War and honoring those you served in it all week at CVA. You can read stories from Iraq War veterans, look back at the war, and watch videos of veterans calling for a better foreign policy going forward on CVA’s The Overwatch.
