Last week, you probably saw that the Senate advanced a repeal of the Iraq War Authorization for Use of Military Force.
Here at VoteVets, that’s something we’ve been working towards for a long time. This organization was founded after our founder Jon Soltz returned from Iraq, and our mission has remained largely the same since then. VoteVets raises the voices of Veterans in our politics, and we hold politicians accountable when they vote against our Veterans and Active Duty Service Members.
One of our very first ad campaigns in 2006 hit Senators for their votes against funding modern body armor for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each of them are now former Senators.
Twenty years on, we commemorate the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, one of the most disastrous foreign policy decisions in the modern history of the United States. And while repealing the AUMF would be the culmination of so much of our work, it is not the end.
Because it was a Republican administration’s lies that led to the Iraq War. That same Republican management led to the Great Recession. Congressional Republicans voted to gut health care and support for our Veterans. Republicans in the House and Senate backed a liar as Commander in Chief. A Republican President led an insurrection against our Capitol. And today, it’s MAGA Republicans who are undermining American support for Ukraine.
There’s a lot of work ahead of us. President Biden is up for re-election, we’re defending nearly two dozen Democratic seats in the Senate, and dozens more in the House.
And we need your help. A donation of $3 today, or whatever you can afford, is going to pay dividends down the line. We’re building critical campaigns that will help hold the Senate and take back the House in 2024.
