A federal court in California has ruled in favor of allowing $6 billion dollars in debt relief to be paid out to student borrowers in Illinois and across the country who were cheated out of their education and their savings by unscrupulous tactics of for-profit colleges.

This victory has been a long time coming. When predatory, for-profit schools misled students into accumulating mountains of debt for low-quality degrees that did not meet qualifications for employment, Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump intentionally delayed processing students’ claims.

With this relief, these defrauded borrowers can finally breathe a sigh of relief. But the student debt crisis is far from over — and we need a strong Democratic majority working to solve it.
