Jack, Big Telecom and the GOP teamed up to block President Biden's nominee, Gigi Sohn, from being confirmed to the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C).

We cannot continue to allow industry executives and unlimited political spending to decide who gets access to the internet and who gets left behind.

Gigi Sohn is a highly qualified and respected public interest advocate, but after 16 months of unrelenting attacks by cable and media industry lobbyists, Sohn withdrew her nomination.

Sohn’s stalled nomination is bad news for American consumers. For years, the F.C.C. has been deadlocked, with two Democratic and two Republican commissioners. Without a fifth commissioner, the split has made it difficult for the Biden administration to make headway on priorities like net neutrality rules and closing the digital divide.

If the Biden administration drags its feet in finding a progressive replacement, it could mean going into the next election cycle without a fifth commissioner. It could also mean: broadband will be more expensive for lack of competition, that your private information will continue to be used and sold at the whim of your broadband provider, that the F.C.C will not have a majority to adopt rules to ensure that everyone has nondiscriminatory broadband access, and that rural Americans will continue the long wait for broadband.

This comes at too high a cost for consumers - Biden must take immediate action to nominate a progressive fifth commissioner.
