On this day in 2003, despite months filled with thousands of protests around the globe, the United States invaded Iraq on what would later be proven to be false pretenses and lies. The following years of unwarranted death and destruction would devastate the region to this day.



"The human consequences of the invasion of Iraq were horrific. Over 275,000 Iraqis perished because of the invasion. Over nine million Iraqis were internally displaced or became refugees abroad. Museums were looted and historic cities devastated. The destabilization of Iraq led to deadly internal warfare between Shia and Sunni factions, followed by the rise of ISIS and its brutal short-lived caliphate. The ultimate responsibility for all this destruction lies with the United States."

On the 20th anniversary of the illegal U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Green Party of the United States remains the only national political party committed to peaceful resolution of international conflicts. During the past 20 years, under Democratic and Republican presidents alike, the U.S. has engaged in endless covert operations, invasions, and proxy wars abroad while clamping down on civil liberties at home to fight the "war on terror".



The two parties of war and Wall Street march in lockstep from one military disaster to the next while steadily increasing an already bloated defense budget. We should be seeking de-escalation and re-directing that wasteful military spending toward the Ecosocialist Green New Deal needed to avert a climate catastrophe and build a just society. Instead, we continue to station hundreds of thousands of troops and non-military independent contractors all over the world in hundreds of army bases in at least eighty countries.



There will be no end to this militaristic madness unless there is a profound political change in Washington, D.C. The Green Party can make that change happen with your help <[link removed]>. We must extinguish the fires of war before they consume us all.
