Hi John,
March is Women’s History Month, a time for us to recognize trailblazing women past and present who play a core role in creating a better, more inclusive society.
As Governor, I am proud to work alongside a team of exceptional women, including Maryland’s first South Asian woman lieutenant governor, Aruna Miller, Speaker Adrienne Jones, and many remarkable leaders in our General Assembly. I couldn’t ask for better partners in this work to move Maryland forward.
Long before I was elected Governor, many important women in my life believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself: my mom (who raised me and my sisters as a working single mother), my late grandmother (Mama Win), my sisters, my aunts, and multiple teachers. And of course, my wife Dawn inspires and motivates me every day.
It wasn’t until I was 14 years old that my mom got her first job that offered benefits and a livable wage, enabling her to work just one job instead of multiple. Whether it’s addressing continued income inequality or the ongoing attacks against women’s reproductive choice, my administration is working to build a more equitable Maryland and protecting the rights of women across our state.
Together, we’re fighting for paid family leave, enshrining the reproductive rights granted in Roe v. Wade into our state constitution, establishing equal pay, and ensuring every family has access to quality, affordable child care.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Aruna, Dawn, my mother, my sisters, and the countless women across Maryland who lift us up with your courage, hard work, skills, and love. Women’s history is Maryland’s history.
Elevate,
Wes
