John,
Three years ago on this day, Donald Trump unveiled one of his earliest and most dangerous executive orders as president: the Muslim travel ban.
This ban (authored by White House senior advisor and white supremacist, Stephen Miller) was designed to prevent people from mostly Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the United States, under the guise of ‘national security.’ We know the truth: it’s racist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic.
With massive public outcry, including protests at major U.S. airports across the country and a multitude of lawsuits, this ban was mostly gutted in the courts but still allowed by the Supreme Court to go into effect, banning travelers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, and North Korea.
Now, three years later and just ten months away from his potential re-election, Trump is throwing red meat at his rabid, racist base by announcing his plans to expand the travel ban, potentially adding Belarus, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania to the list.
Sweeping travel bans don’t make our country safer but they do send signals to the rest of the world that we’re afraid and unwelcoming. It sends the message to fellow Americans who come from these very countries that the president and his supporters regard them as less than American.
This lack of leadership from the White House must be stopped in November.
