I announced the launch of Defend Democracy PAC just last month, and I’ve been consistently blown away by the support and enthusiasm from this grassroots team.

Together, we’re going to enact real change in Virginia – but before the election really gets underway, I want to answer a couple of your most common questions.
Q: You already have an existing PAC. Why did you start a new one?
Back in 2019, I started Defense Dem PAC to elect VA Democrats. However, it’s a federal PAC, which is subject to strict contribution limits set by the FEC.
Our new PAC, Defend Democracy PAC, is a state-level PAC, and subject only to Virginia campaign finance rules.
Defend Democracy PAC will therefore have much greater leeway to fundraise and invest funds here in Virginia – which will help us level the playing field with the GOP money machine.
And most critically, state PACs can only contribute to state and local candidates. Every dollar donated to Defend Democracy PAC in 2023 will solely support VA Democrats.
Q. What’s the mission of Defend Democracy PAC?
Defend Democracy PAC’s mission is to strengthen and protect Virginia’s democracy.
We’ll focus on debunking election conspiracies and holding leaders who spread them accountable, protecting and expanding voting rights for all Virginians, and guaranteeing that every election is free and fair.
We’ll support candidates and causes that champion equality, freedom, opportunity, and truth, and diligently defend the rights of all. Our core Virginia values will guide our work every step of the way.
Q. How will Defend Democracy PAC use my contributions?
Virginians will vote in more than 2,000 elections this November, and Republicans are aggressively targeting the vast majority of them – from School Board to State Senate.
We cannot allow them to expand their influence unchecked.
Our strategy is to pinpoint the most competitive and consequential races across Virginia, and determine how and where our funds can have the greatest impact.
From there, we invest our funds in two ways:
1. Contributing money and resources directly to Democratic candidates in key races.
2. Producing ads, developing a network of Democratic voters and volunteers, registering new and inactive voters, and canvassing across the state to build a winning blue coalition.
We’re committed to using your generous contributions efficiently and effectively.
John, a Republican victory in November would prove catastrophic for abortion rights, voting rights, the environment, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. There’s too much at stake to stand on the sidelines.
