Two pillars

The AUKUS partnership is composed of two pillars: Pillar 1 is a trilateral effort to support Australia in acquiring conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs), and Pillar 2 focuses on expediting cooperation in critical technologies.

In response to last week's Silicon Valley Bank failure, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation invoked the “systemic risk exception,” to guarantee 100 percent of demand deposits—even those above the $250,000 statutory cap.

Although the overall Department of Defense (DOD) FY 2024 budget goes up 3.4 percent in nominal terms, that is only a 0.8 percent real increase, assuming inflation subsides to 2.4 percent.

South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol will visit Japan for a bilateral summit with Japanese prime minister Kishida Fumio, the first official summit in 12 years to be held in either country, rather than on the sidelines of other diplomatic events..
