We’ve had some pretty exciting news.
On Thursday 23rd Jan, a rigorous Westminster Hall debate on assisted dying sent a powerful message to the Government.
Newly elected and seasoned MPs alike spoke passionately in support of a need for both an inquiry and, ultimately, an assisted dying law that protects vulnerable people and provides genuine choice for terminally ill adults.
Robert Buckland, the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, is seriously considering launching an inquiry. If he gives the green light, the Government will be able to fully appreciate the terrible situations that arise for dying people and their families because of our outdated assisted dying law.
This is fantastic news. Remember this only happened because we managed to organise enough people to pressure their MPs and influence the debate. This isn’t easy, and we now need to prepare for the next phase of the campaign - can you donate today to help us get ready?
The success of this debate shows that the tide is starting to turn in Parliament - there is a genuine appetite among lawmakers for a law of this sort. But there’s still a lot of work to do.
