John,
I want to take a moment to speak about something incredibly close to my heart, something incredibly important. So here’s the deal: House Republicans are trying to pass a bill that will ban all trans women and girls from playing on sports teams that align with their gender. Get this: they say it’s about “defending women.”
I don’t understand why Republican legislators are so fixated on making life harder for already vulnerable children who are just trying to live their lives. Trans kids are kids — and dangerous rhetoric from the GOP quite literally endangers them.
So when this bill came before me, I proposed a very straightforward change — that we rename the amendment the “Stigmatizing Vulnerable Children Act.” Because that’s what they’re trying to do here.
The GOP’s not-so-subtle attacks on children are insulting to me as a legislator and a mother. I am the proud mom of a trans kid and it hurts me every single day to watch these attacks on trans youth who are simply trying to make it through life.
When my daughter came out, I supported her completely. But not every child has that experience. 1 in 5 trans kids seriously considers suicide before the age of 18. Trans children experience mental illnesses like depression and anxiety at elevated rates. One of the interventions that can make a difference to trans childrens’ mental health is access to gender-affirming medical care — also under attack from the GOP.
It should not be the case that trans kids have to grow up while politicians condemn them from positions of power for having the audacity to exist. It is shameful. And I will not allow it to stand — not now, not ever.
John, it’s important that we stand together in our fights for justice. That’s my job as a legislator, as a mom, and as a committed member of our powerful progressive movement. This is a defining issue of our time — and I need your help to keep fighting for what’s right. Will you chip in $3 toward our work today?
In solidarity,
Pramila
