Our current criminal-legal system is the antithesis of building stronger families and communities in Western Pennsylvania and across the country. And as a lawyer, a state legislator, and a community organizer, I've seen firsthand the ways our country's civil rights laws are under attack by an unelected, right-wing, Republican-appointed judiciary waging a full-on assault on our humanity — including the Supreme Court majority that threatens our right to vote and interracial marriage.
Rashida, Cori, and I are working to restore the original intent of our civil rights laws and ensure that everyone can access equal justice under the law.
The Justice for All Act is necessary, civil rights legislation with revolutionary potential. If passed, it would:
- End qualified immunity for police officers
- Prohibit racial and gender profiling in police investigations and activity
- Clarify the definition of "sex" for civil rights purposes to include sexual orientation and gender identity
- Empower people with the tools to take on intentional AND unintentional discrimination in all aspects of life
This bill gives critical power back to the People. We have a mandate to ensure we continue building on the rights that Black, brown, and marginalized folks put their bodies on the line for in the 1960s. Now is the time to go forward, and we won't let right-wing judges propped up by billionaires stand in our way.
