I grew up in a
home with two teachers. Two or three times a week, my brother, mom, dad, and I would walk from our house to the student dining hall. My parents would
chat with the students, groundskeepers, maintenance workers, and professors we saw along the way.
Once we got to the cafeteria, we
would get in line with the students waiting to have their IDs checked to get their meals, and then we’d sit down at the tables with them.
At the time, what I valued most about these trips was the soft-serve ice cream. I eventually valued something much more important.
My dad, the school president, would talk to everyone in the college community and loved every minute of it. He spoke to everyone the same and treated
everyone the same, and he always found common ground.
When he heard of a problem that needed solving, he did his part to get things
back on track.
I still carry that with me. When on the campaign trail for Senate in PA, I listened to folks’ problems that
needed solving.
And just like my dad, I’m doing my part to get things back on track.
