Dear john,

Recently you signed up for news on how The Carter Center is working to end disease and conflict around the world. When you did, you set yourself apart from everyone else. You raised your hand and said "Yes, I care." Like me, you believe we can work together to relieve the suffering of world's most impoverished and oppressed people.

With the support of caring individuals like you, The Carter Center travels to some of the most remote and forbidding places on earth — going where no one else will go — to alleviate suffering. We refuse to back down from even the most challenging and difficult situations, and we’re committed to achieving measurable results.

One of our most well-known successes is the fight against Guinea worm disease. It is soon to be the second human disease ever eradicated from the earth and the first disease erased without medicine or a vaccine.

The Carter Center has shown that people can improve their own lives when provided with the necessary skills, knowledge and access to resources. With your help, we can give them the opportunity for hope and a better future.

Individuals like you have helped accomplish this once "impossible" goal. You do this through your support of preventive education and treatment and medical training, skills that are embraced and sustained by the communities they serve. These same proven and low-cost methods are used to fight other neglected diseases, such as river blindness and trachoma, the world’s two leading causes of infectious blindness. And, now, we’re on the verge of eliminating river blindness in the Americas.

Of course, freedom from preventable diseases is only one part of what gives people hope. Good health offers no protection from oppression and conflict or being rendered voiceless through rigged elections or no elections at all.

Carter Center supporters have made it possible for us to monitor more than 100 elections in more than 30 countries, giving us the resources not only to be present on polling day, but to put people on the ground beforehand for as many weeks or months as it takes to train volunteers and help ensure an honest election. In the process, The Carter Center has worked to build international consensus on a set of election standards and has become an internationally respected leader in the field of democracy and elections.

Because of supporters like you, we’ve been able to help negotiate for peace in places as varied as Ethiopia, Uganda, Liberia, Sudan, South Sudan, the Korean Peninsula, Haiti, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Middle East. We also have helped to reduce corruption and make governments more accountable through access to information laws in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Perhaps most important of all, we’re continuing the long battle to strengthen international standards of human rights, protect human rights defenders worldwide, and advance the too-long ignored rights of women and girls around the world.

john, unfortunately, there are still millions of people on earth who live in constant fear of war, facing each day without adequate food, shelter, or access to health care. It is only through the involvement and generosity of individuals like you that The Carter Center can bring relief to the people in the world who face the most adversity.

By making a donation, you can bring health and peace to even more children, women, and men in the world. You can help them improve their lives forever. Thank you for being the caring person the world needs now.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jimmy Carter
