For the sake of our environment, health, and wallets, the need to transition to clean energy grows more urgent every day. We are seeing the effects of climate change here in Maine, from warming, rising seas to increases in the tick population. And due to global events, we’ve experienced a sharp rise in natural gas costs that has put an unacceptable economic strain on Maine families.
But Maine has made tremendous progress. Already, 53%1 – and counting – of our energy comes from clean, renewable sources that are not subject to volatile price spikes stemming from global events. Through unprecedented federal investments in climate action,2 Maine-based initiatives like the Climate Action Plan,3 grid planning4 to ensure Maine’s electric grid is able to accommodate increasingly electrified clean energy, and technological innovation happening at the University of Maine, the blueprint for a 100% clean energy future is here.
We have the political will and the technological know-how to power our state with clean energy that protects the environment, our health, and our economic future. But there needs to be a steady drumbeat of public support to continue showing lawmakers just how much Maine people care about tackling the climate crisis – and doing it in a way that builds a new clean energy economy that ensures a fair and equitable transition for our communities.
