Wow! What a month it’s been.

We have so many inspiring stories to tell you in your latest edition of Stay Connected. 

It's an action packed edition - with everything from activists occupying a Shell platform to how you can take action in your local area by lobbying your MP. And we celebrate finally securing a Global Ocean Treaty! There really is something for everyone.

We couldn’t possibly do any of this without you and it’s so important to take a moment to remember that your unwavering support is crucial in helping us work towards securing a green, fair and more peaceful world.

🌊 The biggest conservation victory ever

This is huge! After almost two decades of broken negotiations and setbacks – world governments have put aside their differences and finally secured a historic Global Ocean Treaty. The treaty was possible because of 18 years of relentless campaigning from many people, like you, and a network of allies around the world. 

And of course, we wouldn’t be able to fight for the ocean without you. Over 380,000 supporters in the UK called for a strong Global Ocean Treaty, joining a 5.5 million strong movement around the globe.

John, this wouldn’t be possible without people like you - whether you spoke out online, donated or took to the streets, we are forever grateful for the part you played. Thank you. This is people power. 

This treaty is a monumental win for our oceans and marine life. And it’s a huge win for billions of humans who rely on our oceans for food, jobs and our livelihoods. Read more about this historic win over on our website.

🛢️ We occupied a Shell Platform

Enough is enough. We need oil companies to stop drilling and start paying for the climate destruction they’ve caused. This is the simple message six Greenpeace activists took to Shell. Carlos, from Argentina; Yakup, from Turkey; Imogen from the UK and Usnea from the US; Pascal from France, and Silja from Germany boarded a vessel contracted by Shell as it headed to the Penguins North Sea oil and gas field with a new oil platform.

The protest lasted for 13 days, with protestors calling on Shell to take responsibility for its role in causing the climate crisis, and pay into loss and damage funds to help countries recover from extreme weather caused by climate change.

🐦 Puffins are starving - will you help?

John, UK ocean wildlife is under threat. Seabirds like puffins, kittiwakes and other marine life are starving as industrial fishing trawlers hoover up their fishy food.

But we have an urgent opportunity to stop this. The UK Government is deciding whether to end the destructive fishing of sandeels, a vital food source for marine life in the North Sea. 

Stopping industrial fishing isn't just about saving puffins. Banning destructive boats means more fish for the communities around our coast that depend on more sustainable fishing methods. 

Will you help convince them to take action to protect the oceans? Sign this petition and show the government that people across the UK want to see an end to the industrial fishing frenzy.

✊ Join the Mass Lobby

On 1st April, people across the UK are going to lobby their MPs to call for proper funding for nationwide energy efficiency in homes to lower bills and tackle the climate crisis. 

Why not find your nearest local event and get involved? If there isn’t an event targeting your MP and you would like to add your support to the campaign, please make your own event. If you feel daunted with setting up your own event, don’t worry! There's a step by step guide so it’s quick and easy to do.

💥 Greenpeace Africa activists disrupt minister’s address

Last week, Greenpeace Africa activists took a direct message to Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe. During the Minister’s address, six activists held up banners with the message ‘Stop Blocking Renewables’ while speakers replayed messages from the South African public expressing their outrage at the government’s inaction on the electricity crisis.

The activists held Minister Mantashe to account for blocking new renewable projects and interrupting electricity supply. Wow! What an action.
