Legislative Update
This week in Public Saftey HF 1182 [ [link removed] ] passed through with strong bipartisan suppport. This bill codifies the court's decision on police on peace officer self-incrimination. This is important legislation to protect our men and women in blue and affords them the same protections under the law that any citizen would have.
Unfortunately not everything was good bipartisan work this week as limiting gun rights continues to be a priority for the majority. As a strong supporter of the second amendment, these bills are a clear violation of that right. They attempt to turn law-abiding citizens into criminals with onerous and restrictive mandates.
Public safety is a top priority of this legislative session and that will be harder to accomplish if we are going to limit the rights of upstanding citizens while doing nothing to address the problem of rising crime. We can provide the resources people may need in times of crisis without infringing on the due process of our citizenry.
Outside of our work, this week the Office of the Legislative Auditor (OLA) released its findings [ [link removed] ] on how the Metropolitan Council mismanaged the bidding process and construction oversight of this project. This Report outlines the failures in decision-making, scheduling, and transparency of the met council during the project that was originally to be completed this year but is now projected to take until 2027. These huge cost overruns and missed deadlines are all dollars that could be better spent on infrastructure that would have a much greater impact for more Minnesotans.
