This Sunshine Week—which highlights the importance of transparency—we uncovered how the government has failed Afghans. 

One year ago, we started digging for more information about the life-threatening delays thousands of Afghans faced when trying to seek safety in the United States after the U.S. military withdrew from Afghanistan. 

Despite the Biden administration’s commitment to protect Afghans, a key method for providing this protection—humanitarian parole—was not working. The government had only processed a fraction of the applications for humanitarian parole. 

Now, a year later, we have some answers. 

Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the American Immigration Council and the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), we’ve learned USCIS was woefully unprepared to process these applications. The agency prioritized humanitarian parole applications for Afghan nationals in the time leading up to the U.S. military withdrawal, but then changed course, leaving thousands of people trapped in Afghanistan. These delays have devastating consequences for those left behind.  

This discovery shows why government transparency is so vital. We wouldn’t have this information if we didn’t have access to government records.
