Majority Party Pay-to-Play Fundraiser Stopped
An invitation to a mid-session fundraiser hosted by the majority party raised eyebrows and made headlines last week. The fundraiser, which was to be held right across the street from the Capitol, was exploiting a loophole in the law that bans legislators and party units from receiving contributions from lobbyists during the legislative session. The invitation, which was sent to lobbyists, stated that current members of DFL House and Senate leadership would be in attendance.
Once this was discovered, Rep. Torkelson introduced HF 2790 [ [link removed] ] - a bill that would close this loophole by prohibiting major political parties from accepting contributions during the legislative session. Within hours of the bill?s introduction, the fundraiser was postponed.
Safe & Sound Minnesota
Last week, Republicans introduced our plan to improve public safety in Minnesota. The plan includes 17 GOP bills that focus on confronting the criminal threat, supporting police, and overhauling our court system to require more transparency and accountability. You can watch the press conference here [ [link removed] ] and see the full press release here [ [link removed] ].
The Safe & Sound Plan has three parts: confronting the threat of violent and repeat criminals, strengthening police, and holding judges and prosecutors accountable with public data and information.
We are more than two months into session and the majority party has yet to pass any bills that improve or even address public safety. It?s time to tackle this problem for a safer, brighter Minnesota.
Addressing Homelessness
The last couple weeks, we have heard stand alone bills that appropriate millions of dollars to address homelessness. We know this is a complex issue that affects many. I struggled to support these bills because they spend money without addressing the actual cause of the problem: mental health and drug abuse. Rather than putting millions of dollars to build more brick-and-mortar buildings, we need to tackle the root of the problem. Also, we still have not heard any bills that would address the actual housing crisis -? the lack of housing. We need to remove burdensome mandates and regulations that make building houses more expensive and out of reach for those who are first time home buyers. Simply adding more money to the already millions we are spending does not address the real problem.
Mueller Minute
Please listen to my Mueller Minute that talks about the break-neck pace we are going to hear all the bills the Majority Party wants to include in their omnibus bills. This pace is not sustainable and the amount of money the majority party wants to spend will lead us to a financial cliff.

With extra committee hearings this week, I have had little time to meet with constituents. But I do want to give a shout out to some amazing young athletes!

I also want to congratulate the city of Austin for their amazing reception at the Capitol Art Gallery this past Monday. A sampling of pictures from the book ?Our Austin, Our America? is being showcased at the Capitol from March 13 to June 30th. This is the first exhibit in this gallery since COVID. These pictures highlight the amazing ethnic communities we have in Austin and how we are better together. Many of my colleagues have visited the gallery and have commented on how special this exhibit is.
