Jack, there's a lot to like about President Biden's proposed budget: It increases taxes for wealthy corporations and the ultra-rich, and invests in stronger families and communities.

However, Biden also prioritizes weapons and war to the tune of a whopping $886.4 BILLION. That's more than 50% of all federal discretionary spending at a time when low- and middle- income Americans are struggling to make ends meet.

House Republicans have every intention of forcing a default unless they are allowed to kill critical social safety nets like Medicare and Social Security. It's an asinine debate led by ridiculous people who have proven they do not understand words or numbers, much less the federal budget.

If we want to have a serious discussion about curbing federal spending, then we should start with the Pentagon. Instead of sacrificing the well-being of American families and communities, we could instead cut funding for outdated ships, malfunctioning planes, dangerous nuclear weapons, and giveaways to corrupt defense contractors.

Or, before anyone in Congress demands we choose between ensuring healthcare for all or ending childhood poverty, between ensuring clean drinking water and breathable air or a living wage, they can first demand that the Pentagon pass an audit before it's gifted an even larger budget.

With budget negotiations for Fiscal Year 2024 already underway, now is the time to urge Congress to cut spending on weapons and war, and to instead focus our national spending on our nation's well-being.
