Forecasting for 2020

With the 2020 Census count beginning and prominent issues around immigration, voting rights, discrimination, and more heating up, it will be an eventful year, and we are ready to make the year count for all of our communities. Stay tuned as we go more in depth with what to expect this year in advocacy and the issues you care about.
Community Alert on Immigration Fees
USCIS published a proposed rule that would increase the naturalization application fee to $1,170 (the current fee is $640) and abolish the fee waiver and reduced fee for naturalization. It is not clear when these changes might take effect. If you can apply for naturalization now, do not delay!

EYE ON THE NEWS

Our president and executive director John C. Yang testified alongside civil rights advocates for a hearing on hard-to-count communities before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Jan. 9. Read more coverage.

The Senate passed a bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to ensure that the 2020 Census is fair and accurate.

We sent a letter to CNN with SEARAC and Hmong National Development regarding their reporting about a mass shooting in the Hmong community. Among other requests, we called on CNN to write a follow-up feature on Hmong Americans and advised that reporters and editors go through diversity training.

Policy and Legal Advocacy Updates

A New Way Forward: “It’s Time To End Immigrant Criminalization”
Unjust immigration laws have perpetuated a mass incarceration and detention crisis tearing apart our communities and harming the lives of thousands of Asian refugees and immigrants. Read more about how the New Way Forward bill would improve the lives of immigrants and their families.

Remembering Fred Korematsu
Now through January 30, the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and Advancing Justice | AAJC are holding a fundraiser commemorating the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Korematsu v. United States which upheld the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. Please consider donating, as funds will used to strengthen our roles in educating and being a voice for marginalized communities, families, and individuals nationwide.
Spotlight on Youth Leadership
We awarded six stipends to student leaders to support campus-based and community-based projects that elevate our communities’ stories and experiences and advance dialogue, advocacy, and civic engagement within our communities. These leaders were participants of our 2019 Youth Leadership Summit and will have projects that include events around DACA, a convening of young Asian American leaders in Virginia, and more. Throughout this year, we will update you on the progress of these projects. The Youth Leadership Summit is made possible through the generous support of State Farm.
