Legislative Update
This week the Office of the Legislative Auditor (OLA) released its findings on how the Metropolitan Council mismanaged the bidding process and construction oversight of this project. This Report outlines the failures in decision-making, scheduling, and transparency of the met council during the project that was originally to be completed this year but is now projected to take until 2027. These huge cost overruns and missed deadlines are all dollars that could be better spent on infrastructure that would have a much greater impact for more Minnesotans.
Democrat leaders in the twin cities continue to show that they have zero interest in fiscal responsibility. On the House floor we made a motion to urgently bring up the complete tax exemption of social security tax for a vote. Unfortunately again the majority decided to defer this campaign promise in favor of more government spending. All of this while the budget surplus continues to grow and everyday families are facing higher costs on gas and groceries.
In another floor motion this week we submitted our minority report to the education omnibus bill. In contrast to the current bill, our report focuses on providing solutions that get students back on track after nearly three years of learning loss. Currently, less than half of our students can read at grade level. Our plan provides resources to get students science-backed curriculum, train teachers on the best practices for implementing this curriculum, and provide access to tutors so that students can make up lost time. This is where our tax dollars should be spent rather than wasted on a light rail route that isn?t even operating yet.
How would you like to see your tax dollars spent? Let me know what programs or infrastructure would you prioritize.
