Hi there,

As a recent article in The New York Times pointed out, the U.S. House of Representatives currently has 28 Black women in its ranks – and the U.S. Senate has 0. In fact, in the Senate’s 233-year history, only two Black women have ever served in the Senate.

As we’ve underscored in our communications with you, it is incredibly hard to run for office as a woman – and it’s even harder as a Black woman.

From the article: “The numbers are stark: Only two Black women have served in the Senate in its 233-year history — Ms. Harris, who was elected in 2016 in California, and Carol Moseley Braun, the Illinois Democrat who served one term in the 1990s. Out of 64 Black women who have run for the Senate since 2010, only eight have secured major-party nominations. No Black woman has ever been elected governor and, out of the 22 who have run for the position since 2010, only four have become major-party nominees.”

Can you pitch in $20.23 to help fund our next wave of endorsements immediately?

These stats are unacceptable – and serve as an indication that many great potential leaders are falling through the cracks. That is EXACTLY why Her Bold Move was created. There are too many phenomenal candidates trying to navigate a political campaigning infrastructure that wasn’t built for them. For example, endorsements are often based on fundraising numbers, incumbency, pedigree, favors, or the propensity to favor the status quo. We know women find themselves at a disadvantage in all of those categories compared to their male counterparts. For Black women, the disadvantage is even more pronounced.

There is a greater need for Black female representation in our government than we can possibly express – especially as so much recent legislation that impacts women will profoundly impact Black women (think: abortion rights and the high mortality rate among Black mothers). We need Black women in the highest, most powerful offices of our government – and in the rooms where critical, life-or-death decisions are being made.

We must work to ensure that more Black women have what they need to run for office and win. Her Bold Move is committed to providing this support, but we cannot do it alone. Help fund our first round of endorsements of the year by pitching in $20.23 now. → [link removed]
