PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo a Casa
"Returning Home"
It is with a heavy heart that we share the details of our first case this year and our youngest Volviendo a Casa Program recipient. Diego was a 20-year-old migrant from El Estado de Mexico, Zumpahuacán who had just celebrated his birthday on February 12. His destination was San Diego, where he was hoping to work with his aunt and uncle and be able to help his parents and 3 younger sisters back in Mexico. He lost his life when he attempted to swim into the US, and drowned in the Pacific Ocean. He was the oldest and only son in his family.

Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to coordinate with the Mexican consulate and pay for funeral expenses and transportation back to Mexico so that his family may say their final goodbyes. Diego Enver Barcenas Diaz, May he Rest in Peace.

We are devastated at the loss of another life; we continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, which are the root cause of these tragedies and continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing more deaths.

Water Drop:

We want to thank Sandra and Kevin and the Bennion Center Alternative Breaks for joining us this week as part of our Educational Groups! We have been visited by them before and we’re so excited to know our work here at Border Angels has reach all the way in Utah!

The Bennion Center joined us on a Water Drop where we came across some migrant activity, and we were able to drop off over a dozen gallons and a couple dozen beanies for the extreme cold weather and snow currently In the desert. We highly appreciate all of the students’ respect for the space, passion for volunteer work, and openness to share their experiences and feelings related to migration and border work. We are grateful for the opportunity to not only provide humanitarian aid but educate our visitors who aren’t familiar with the borderlands.

If your school/group/organization would like to join us or find out what other educational opportunities are available please email us at [email protected] today!
Shelter Aid:

When you support our Shelter Aid program you help us provide meals for migrant families! Check out the latest dinner from our supported shelter Volviendo a la Patria! Our migrant friends dined on some bacon-wrapped pork loin, carne con chile stew, and rice.

Our Shelter Aid program continues to provide holistic support to 15 shelters in Tijuana, feeding and assisting hundreds of migrants daily. Help us help migrant families as we cover rent, utilities, groceries, provide mental health workshops and services through our partnership with Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C.

Familias Reunidas Bond Fund
[link removed]
Meet Nilson, our first Familias Reunidas bond fund recipient this year! He is a 45-year-old recipient from Peru who spent 7 months inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center. He shares the following message:

“Good morning, I am Nilson Morales, I want to thank through this media platform the organization Border Angels for securing my freedom by paying my [immigration] bond. I hope God continues to bless you all for supporting immigrants like me. Good luck. Thank you!”

If you would like to help others like Nilson you can donate here. ([link removed]) your donation goes towards freeing someone from detention! If your loved one is in the Otay Mesa, Adelanto, or Imperial Regional Detention Center and you need assistance paying for their bond, you can fill out an application on our website.
Calling All Barbers:
We are looking for volunteer barbers to help out on our April 1st Caravan of Love! Email us now to donate your talents and help us provide haircuts for migrant families in our supported Tijuana shelters.

We collaborated with barber and fellow migrant Cristhian at the beginning of this year, who taught us how important and meaningful this service can be. Through our Shelter Aid program we provide basic and emergent needs for the shelters, but also services of love like this one that boosts morale and provides some much-needed self-care!

This event will take place Saturday, April 1st at 7:30 AM. We will meet at 2258 Island Ave. San Diego, CA 92102 (Sherman Heights Community Center) and then cross over into Tijuana. You will need a passport or other appropriate travel documents as we will be crossing into Tijuana. More details will be disclosed upon signup.

News Spotlight:

8 dead in 'worst maritime smuggling tragedies' off San Diego beach
At least eight people were dead after two migrant smuggling boats capsized off a San Diego beach in a suspected human-smuggling operation, authorities said.

"This is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California, certainly here in the city of San Diego," said James Gartland, chief of the lifeguard division in San Diego.

Gartland said a woman called 911 at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, saying she was on a panga boat with 15 people aboard that made it to the shore at Black's Beach. Speaking in Spanish, the caller said another panga – relatively small fishing boats with outboard motors often used for smuggling operations – had capsized, and eight people were in the water.

Frustrated migrants storm border between Mexico and El Paso, Texas
Hundreds of migrants tried to rush into the United States from Mexico on Sunday. The sudden crush prompted opponents of President Joe Biden to call for better border security.

The group of mostly Venezuelan nationals attempted to cross a bridge connecting Ciudad Juarez with El Paso, Texas. The migrants broke through Mexican security, but were stopped by barbed wire and US border agents in riot gear.

"We all ran, and they put a fence with barbed wire around us," said Jackson Solis, a 23-year-old Venezuelan who went to the bridge on Sunday. "They threw tear gas at us."

Videos posted on social media showed the crowd, which included several children, attempting to cross the bridge before retreating back to the Mexican side.

The incident prompted criticism from Republican leaders. Texas Senator John Cornyn accused Biden of failing to work with congressional leaders to stem the flow of migrants.
