A 23-year megadrought has left the Southwest at the driest it is estimated to have ever been in 1,200 years—and as a result, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and the birds that depend on them are suffering. Birds like the Eared Grebe can’t endure such severe weather, and as the climate changes, these extremes could become more and more common. The research is clear: To protect birds, we must protect water.

The climate crisis means less safe, clean water for birds

Human activities have deprived birds like the Common Loon of the clean water they depend on.

Maine and Minnesota could see loons vanish by the end of the century.

We’ve already lost 3 billion birds in the span of a human lifetime.

 

Using our more than a century of expertise and proven combination of committed advocacy, empowering education, and expert on-the-ground conservation, we address both the impacts of climate change and its causes. We work to increase the resilience of birds and essential habitats while fighting for cleaner energy and reduced carbon emissions. And together with caring bird lovers like you, we’re making a difference. Last year, Audubon was instrumental in passing legislation to increase funding for water projects that impact birds and communities, including the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) and the Saline Lake Ecosystems in the Great Basin States Program Act. But our work is far from over.
