Size
Ostriches are the tallest and heaviest birds in the world. Males can be up 9 feet tall and weigh 300 pounds. Ostriches also lay the heaviest eggs—they weigh 3 pounds! |
Habitat and diet
They live in deserts, shrublands, grasslands, and savannas in eastern and southern Africa. They mostly eat roots, leaves, and seeds but also eat insects, lizards, and snakes. |

Common ostriches live in pairs or flocks ranging from just a few individuals to a few dozen, with a dominant male and a dominant female. They can't fly, but when threatened, they can run faster than any other bird, reaching a top speed of 43 mph. |
