International Holocaust Remembrance Day |

EP Plenary | EU-UK withdrawal agreement



Today marks the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and 75th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi-occupied concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. A ceremony to mark the occasion will be held by the European Parliament on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the European Commission is holding a high-level conference on the topic of European Climate Law, while ministers from General Affairs Council will meet to discuss both the priorities of the Croatian Presidency and Conference on the Future of Europe. On Wednesday, MEPs will vote on the ratification of UK’s withdrawal from the EU, while Commissioners will discuss the work programme for the coming months.

European Parliament

This week MEPs will meet for a two-day plenary session in Brussels. The first plenary day will commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January.
This will be followed by a debate and a vote on the ratification of the EU-UK withdrawal deal the agreement has been signed by the Presidents of the European Commission and the Council of EU. On Thursday, Members of the Parliament will hold a debate on the European Commission Work Programme 2020, followed by a vote on the Parliament's calendar of part-sessions for 2021 and 2022, and the gender pay gap.

European Commission

Commissioners will meet for a College meeting on Wednesday to discuss Commission Work Programme for 2020 and 5G communication.
On Tuesday, the Commission is organising a High-Level public conference on implementing the European Green Deal. The focus of this conference will be the European Climate Law which the Commission is planning to propose in the first 100 days of its mandate. The event will be hosted by European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans and bring together a wide range of stakeholders.

Council of the EU

General Affairs Council will meet on Tuesday to hear the priorities of the Croatian Presidency for the first half of 2020, which are united in the motto “A strong Europe in a world of challenges” and built upon four pillars: a Europe that develops, connects, protects and influences. Later that day, ministers will exchange views on the Conference on the Future of Europe, following the decision made during the European Council last month when the Croatian Presidency of the Council of EU was tasked with defining a Council position on the scope and content of such a conference.
