Here are some updates from the last few days. |
Today, Vote.org, the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and the Florida State Conference of the NAACP filed a lawsuit challenging Florida’s “wet signature” requirement, which requires an “original signature” with a voter registration application. The plaintiffs argue that election officials have interpreted “original signature” to mean signed using pen on paper and therefore improperly reject applications received via email or fax or with an electronic signature.

Today, the Arkansas Legislature sent two bills to the governor: Senate Bill 255, which prohibits private grants for election administration, and Senate Bill 258, which bans drop boxes in the state. Both bills now await the likely signature of Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R).

Yesterday, U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) asking the DOJ to investigate the recent transfer of election authority in Cochise County, Arizona. On Feb. 28, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors voted to transfer election authority from the Cochise County Elections Department to County Recorder David Stevens (R), who is known for supporting an illegal hand count and working closely with election conspiracy theorists.

Idaho House Bill 124, which would remove student ID cards from the list of acceptable identification to vote, has been sent to Gov. Brad Little (R), who now has five days to sign the bill. Idaho has seen a 66% increase in registration for voters aged 18 and 19 in recent years, the highest registration rate for new, young voters in the country.
