John,
Yesterday, there was a hearing that will impact whether or not medication abortion access nationwide will continue, presided over by a Trump-appointed judge in Texas.
While the ruling is still to come, this case makes it clear that anti-choice extremists will stop at nothing to threaten access to reproductive care of any kind. And even MORE threatening is that this hearing happened mostly in secret, shielded from public eyes and scrutiny.
Here's what we know: data from hundreds of studies and 23 years of approved use has shown that mifepristone (the abortion medication in question) is highly safe and effective, according to 12 of the country’s most respected medical associations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association, which signed an amicus brief in the Texas case. It is used for abortion in more than 60 other countries and has a safety profile similar to that of ibuprofen.
This medication is used in more than half of abortions in the United States, and since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, these pills have increasingly become the focus of political and legal battles. This case will have consequences for states where abortion is still legal and accessible — not just for those trying to restrict it.
Plus, a court has never before ordered the federal government to withdraw the approval of a drug that had been legally available for years.
So if this case sounds baseless, that's because it is.
Anti-choice extremists know they can't win at the ballot box, so they bring cases without merit to courts run by Trump judges in order to bypass democracy.
We will keep you up to date as this case progresses, but for the latest, follow us on social.
And if you're able, please consider making a contribution to support our work fighting to elect prochoice champions at every level and to turn out prochoice voters across the country who will fight for reproductive care and access.
Thank you for being with us in this fight,
Maris Nyhart
