President's Message

The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism are gearing up for National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) 2023, to be held March 20-26. This annual, week-long health observance inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth.

As school nurses, we are on the front lines of drug and substance abuse prevention. View NASN's Drugs of Abuse page for resources to help you discuss drugs with your students.

You can also check out the NASN course Assessing Substance Abuse Risk in Students: Using the CRAFFT Screening Tool to gain an understanding of assessment tools geared toward school-aged students to assess potential substance and nicotine use and/or abuse.

School Nurse Burnout, Mental Health, and Well-Being

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact and changed the work of school nurses. The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) article, Burnout and Mental Health and Well-Being of School Nurses After the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A National Cross-Sectional Survey, aimed to examine the associations between job stressors, COVID-19-related concerns, burnout, and mental health and well-being among school nurses, and whether any of these associations are mediated by burnout.

  • Receive an alert for the latest JOSN issue and when new articles are published online.

Develop Your Professional Identity in Nursing
