Watch out – AB 642 is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Friend –
One of the most dangerous bills in California this year is a trick. AB 642, written by the California Police Chiefs Association, pretends to protect against mass face surveillance, but in reality, it is a blank check for the police and tech companies.
Face surveillance gives the government unprecedented power to automatically track us without our consent – recording where we go, who we know, and even how we feel.
AB 642 cannot be allowed to become law. If we don't act now, it will endanger Black people, poor people, immigrants, activists, women, and LGBTQ people.

Face surveillance has already falsely identified multiple Black men, leading to wrongful arrests and trauma. But even if perfectly accurate, we know that a surveillance technology this powerful would inevitably lead to more police violence, more incarceration, and more deportations. Out-of-state prosecutors may seek to exploit it to identify people who come to California seeking abortions or gender-affirming care.
The only responsible way to regulate facial recognition is to prohibit the police from using it. If you don't want to live in a state where your face is regularly scanned and stored when you leave the house, send a message to your Assemblymember asking them to vote NO on AB 642. <[link removed] ?ms_aff=CAP&initms_aff=CAP&ms_chan=eml&initms_chan=eml>
