Here’s a big idea for you:

We should institute a massive national service program for America’s young people.

Re: it's time to expand national service

Friends,

We can all agree that our next President will have the huge task of unifying our country.

For the last 4 years, Trump has done everything in his power to deepen the political divide, escalate the partisan bickering, and normalize hatred and cruelty in our national discourse.

America urgently needs a leader who will commit to healing this nation by bringing people together.

One way we can accomplish this is a big new national service program for young people across the country.

This will provide opportunities for young adults to give back to their country and to meet and work with folks from all backgrounds and walks of life.

Because the truth is, right now we need big ideas -- just like this one. And we need to elect someone who has a real way of getting them done.

Every American completing a year of national service will get free community college or technical training.

There will be four ways to serve:

  1. A newly created Climate Corps;
  2. A new expanded Community Service program;
  3. A new National Infrastructure Apprenticeship program;
  4. Military Service (the requirements and duration will continue as they currently exist).

The new Community Service program would operate similarly to AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps, and participants would work on projects such as mentoring and literacy tutoring for disadvantaged students, awareness programs for public health campaigns, outreach activities for social service programs, and structured after school care programs.

If that’s not your thing, you’ll have the option of participating in the new National Infrastructure Apprenticeship program. This program would center on government partnerships with builders and trade unions to offer infrastructure apprenticeships.

Private companies would be awarded contracts to undertake projects such as improving public parks or renovating federal buildings to make them environmentally green. Those who complete this apprenticeship program would receive a professional certificate proving mastery of particular skill sets.

Last, the newly created Climate Corps will help us fight climate change by focusing on clean energy projects, including solar installation, improving building efficiency, developing community gardens, and increasing awareness about sustainable practices.

Participants will be stationed in rural and low-income areas to assist in transitioning these communities to a green economy and invest in environmentally friendly projects.

These programs will not only foster a sense of service and patriotism, but it will expose participants to people from different economic backgrounds, different parts of the country, and different political beliefs.

It’s time to bring the country together, restore our sense of shared purpose and a common and inclusive national destiny.
