John,

As cities continue to get warmer in the face of climate change, urban communities across the globe are facing rising levels of heat-related deaths.

Good news, though: These increasing mortality rates can be prevented — and pretty easily, too!

Enter trees. A new study from Barcelona’s Institute of Global Health found that nearly 40 percent of the thousands of heat-related deaths can be avoided through increased tree coverage in cities. That’s huge, John!

Researchers estimate that just a 30 percent increase in tree coverage could lead to 40 percent fewer deaths from urban heat.

Let’s break it down: More trees in cities means more shade, and therefore, a smaller surface area for dark roads and asphalt to retain heat. They also suck up carbon from the air, making them a true win-win. It’s so simple — and incredibly cost-effective, too!

John, this is an easy and accessible step we can take to protect our people and our planet. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to implement a National Urban Forestry Initiative — will you stand with SEEC and add your name to our petition?
