Barely a month after the tragic shooting at Michigan State University, I joined former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, as well as lawmakers, activists and hundreds of Michiganders, at Michigan’s capitol to demand real change to our gun laws.

I’ve had to attend far too many of these kinds of events, but thankfully this one follows hearings in the Michigan legislature on a package of 11 gun safety bills. These are no-brainer proposals that the vast majority of Michiganders support like universal background checks, red flag laws, and safe storage requirements.

I stood alongside advocates, survivors, students, and lawmakers, fighting to make sure gun violence prevention legislation gets the attention it deserves. These are children, some of whom have experienced two shootings at MSU and Oxford High School in less than 15 months, showing unbelievable courage to demand that *something* must change following the deaths of their friends and classmates.

We also stood in front of a group of angry protesters, who spent the day screaming at survivors of gun violence. While this group may have been loud, they don’t represent the majority of responsible gun owners in our state – in fact, they’re out of touch with the shifting sands on this issue. No reasonable person treats an 18-year-old who has just survived a school shooting like that.

The vast majority of Michiganders, regardless of party, understand that you can be a responsible gun owner and support measures to keep our kids safe. We are going to set an example here in Michigan on how to respond to tragedies like MSU with direct, meaningful legislation. This is possible because of what I’ve been saying for months: elections really matter. Michigan is quickly becoming the case study on how to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in a swing state AND on how to put a Democratic majority to good use.

I’m running for Senate because Washington desperately needs leadership like we are seeing right here, right now, in Michigan. It’s going to take a big team to win a race in a swing state like this. So what do you say?
