TROY?State Superintendent Dr. Michel Rice travelled to the Troy School District Tuesday to honor the school library at Troy High School, this year?s recipient of the 21st Century Model School Library award.

Troy High School?s library was selected for the honor for its focus on connecting the school community with community resources such as the public library, as well as its outstanding literacy support across the curriculum for students and teachers.

?Strong libraries help drive high literacy rates, and Troy?s library is a leader,? said Dr. Rice. ?We must continue to actively engage our children in literacy, and especially diverse literature. It is critical that we share diverse books and authors with our students?so that they can see themselves and others in their literature.?

Dr. Rice was joined by Troy School District Superintendent Dr. Richard Machesky, Troy High School Principal Remo Roncone, and the award-winning Troy High School Media Specialist Toni Isaac. The state superintendent was then given a tour of the high school and had lunch and conversation with Troy High School students.

Dr. Rice then went to Hamilton Elementary School in Troy to read to second grade students in celebration of March is Reading Month. At Hamilton Elementary, he joined Hamilton principal Dr. David Recker and teacher Whitney Swichtenberg to sit and read to the students, helping the children build their reading skills and learn the joy and wonder to be experienced through reading.
