Hi John,
There are over 1,000 incidents of derailments every year in the United States. Many of them carry hazardous, flammable, and toxic materials.
What you need to know: In the wake of the ongoing environmental and public health crises caused by the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, Representatives Ro Khanna and Chris Deluzio have introduced the Decreasing Emergency Railroad Accident Incidents Locally Act (DERAIL Act). The DERAIL Act will help make sure derailments don’t cause toxic catastrophes in local communities.
Support the DERAIL Act
The DERAIL Act will guarantee that:
- Every train with one or more cars containing hazardous material be classified as a high-hazard flammable train and be subject to our highest safety standards.
- After a train derailment, train carriers report all toxic materials within 24 hours to the National Response Center in addition to local, state, federal, and tribal governments.
Passing the DERAIL Act will help protect our communities from the disasters like the one caused by the recent derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
Here’s what you can do: Your Representative can support the DERAIL Act and put the safety of our communities first, but they need to hear from you. Sign to support the DERAIL Act of 2023.
