Gavin Newsom Lobbied, Praised White House for Bailing Out SVB, Neglects to Inform Public He Greatly Benefits from Deal

National Review: California governor Gavin Newsom lobbied the White House to bail out Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and later celebrated the decision after it was made public, without mentioning that the firm is a backer in at least three wine companies he owns. However, the governor failed to note in his official remarks that at least three wineries owned by Newsom are listed clients of SVB. Newsom further glossed over his personal banking ties with the now-defunct firm and the fact that his wife, Jennifer Siebel, was the recipient of a $100,000 charitable donation from SVB in 2021 (National Review). New York Post: The Biden administration announced that it would backstop all depositors — including those whose accounts hold more than the $250,000 threshold for FDIC insurance coverage (New York Post).

San Francisco Board Approves Draft for $5 Million Reparations Payment
National Review: San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to accept a draft plan from the city’s African American Reparations Advisory Committee that would pay out a one-time $5 million payment per qualifying person. While board members spoke positively about the advisory committee’s work during the more than five-hour hearing, the acceptance of the draft does not mean the board will ultimately approve all of the proposals included therein. The board can vote to approve, reject or change any or all of the proposals (National Review). Associated Press: Some supervisors have said previously that the city can’t afford any major reparations payments right now given its deep deficit amid a tech industry downturn (Associated Press). Washington Examiner: The San Francisco chapter of the NAACP called for the city to reject the proposal. The group argued for investments and opportunities for the black community instead of direct payments to black residents. The organization called instead for investment in education, “economic empowerment,” public and affordable housing, healthcare, and a “black center of town” in the Fillmore Heritage Center (Washington Examiner).

New York Democrats Spar Over Gov. Hochul’s Budget Proposal
HotAir: New York is still in the process of attempting to sort out its overly-bloated budget for the fiscal year, but it’s not going well. Governor Kathy Hochul submitted a draft budget six weeks ago, but the state legislature has been bogged down, beset with infighting over the details. One of the chief complaints from the legislators (and many of you will find this hard to believe) is that Hochul has drifted “too far toward the center” since winning a full term of her own last year. With that in mind, the amendments that are currently being filed to push the governor further back to the left are budget-busting and eye-opening (HotAir). New York Post: Albany Democrats outright rejected Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed overhaul of bail reform, as well as her push to expand charter schools, in budget resolutions expected to pass in coming days. The non-binding counterproposals to the $227 billion draft spending plan Hochul unveiled on Feb. 1 also include a litany of other proposals that run to the left of Hochul politically. Ideas floated in the Democratic budget priorities include increasing the minimum wage, doubling down on solitary confinement limits, and expanding publicly funded health care to illegal immigrants (New York Post).

Air Force Job Openings Include DEI Managers Paying $180,000 Yearly
This woke initiative is certain to make our enemies fear us. Fox News: The U.S. Air Force this month launched an effort to hire a handful of senior-level diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) managers and is hoping to place these officials in posts across the country, from Washington, D.C., to Alaska. Each post pays at least $82,000 per year, and the top position at the Pentagon could pay more than $180,000 per year (Fox News). Daily Mail: Responsibilities include implementing ‘Diversity and Inclusion educational and training courses and workshops to affect a culture of Diversity and Inclusion.’ Critics of the diversity push say the strength of America’s military during a time of heightened international tensions ‘is being threatened by a left-wing woke agenda’ and called the agenda ‘disturbing’ (Daily Mail).

Biden Administration Pressures Chinese TikTok Owners to Sell Their Shares
Wall Street Journal: The Biden administration is demanding that TikTok’s Chinese owners sell their stakes in the video-sharing app or face a possible U.S. ban of the app, according to people familiar with the matter. The move represents a major shift in policy on the part of the administration, which has been under fire from some Republicans who say it hasn’t taken a tough enough stance to address the perceived security threat from TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd. TikTok executives have said that 60% of ByteDance shares are owned by global investors, 20% by employees and 20% by its founders, though the founders’ shares carry outsize voting rights, as is common with tech companies. TikTok said Wednesday that a forced sale wouldn’t address the perceived security risk (Wall Street Journal). Insider: The move represents a significant shift on behalf of the Biden administration, which has come under criticism from Republicans for not taking a strong enough stance against the national security threat posed by TikTok (Insider).

Stocks Plummet After Swiss Bank Gets Funding Cut
CNBC: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell Wednesday as concern over a banking crisis spreading to Europe pressured the broader market. The 30-stock Dow ended 280.83 points. The Dow at one point was down 725 points, and the S&P 500 briefly gave up all of its 2023 gains. The indexes regained some ground in afternoon trading following an announcement from a Swiss regulator that the country’s central bank would give Credit Suisse liquidity if necessary. Investors were concerned after the Saudi National Bank, Credit Suisse’s largest investor, said it could not provide any more funding (CNBC). CNN: Already on edge after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank in the United States last week, investors dumped shares in the embattled Swiss bank earlier in the day, sending them plummeting to a new record low after its biggest backer appeared to rule out providing any more funding (CNN).

Antifa Blocks, Attacks Attendees at Charlie Kirk’s Speech at UC Davis
HotAir: Charlie Kirk gave a speech last night at UC Davis and, as you’d probably expect, he was not welcomed by all. A group of protesters, some of them dressed in black bloc, tried to prevent students from entering the building, vandalized the outside of the building and smashed a bunch of glass doors. Two people were arrested for graffiti and one police officer was slightly injured when someone reportedly jumped on his back and knocked him to the ground (HotAir). Rebecca Brannon: Antifa and far leftists pepper spray and hit UC Davis student with umbrellas. They’re currently blocking student pathways protesting a TPUSA Charlie Kirk event on campus tonight (Twitter). Fox News: It is the face of rising generation of censors and speech phobics that has been carefully cultivated by many in academia. Our institutions of higher education have become academic echo chambers where opposing views are no longer tolerated and preventing free speech is claimed to be acts of free speech (Fox News).

Kamala Harris’ Husband Equates Parents in School Board Meeting to Nazis
Washington Examiner: Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, drew parallels between divisions that have flared up at school board meetings with the hatred that led to the Holocaust. Emhoff, who has made combating antisemitism a top subject, made the remarks while recounting his recent trip to Eastern Europe during a discussion with Symone Sanders, a former aide to the vice president (Washington Examiner). Greg Price: Doug Emhoff says the “hate” that led to the Holocaust is “interconnected” to the “hate (in America) you see just going to a school meeting” (Twitter). Daily Caller: In 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to the Biden administration comparing parents at school board meetings to “domestic terrorists.” Attorney General Merrick Garland then directed the FBI to “use its authority” on parents who pose a threat and disrupt school board meetings (Daily Caller).

Bay Area Looks to Ban Gas Appliances Except Gas Stoves
Bloomberg: The San Francisco Bay Area is poised to ban new home furnaces and water heaters that burn natural gas as states, cities and political parties fight over the fuel’s future. The region’s air pollution regulators are scheduled to vote Wednesday on the proposed ban, which would take effect in several stages from 2027 through 2031 depending on the size and type of equipment. Notably, the proposal does not target gas-burning stoves, which have emerged as a cultural flashpoint in the debate over phasing out in-home use of the fossil fuel (Bloomberg).

Libya Misplaces 2.5 Tons of Natural Uranium
We aren’t talking about losing keys or a phone. Misplacing 2.5 tons of uranium is negligent. Daily Wire: The International Atomic Energy Agency said in a confidential report this week that 2.5 tons of natural uranium have gone missing from a site in Libya that is not controlled by the government. A statement from IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said that the inspection was supposed to happen last year, but “had to be postponed because of the security situation in the region.” Officials said that investigations were already underway to locate the missing nuclear materials. Natural uranium is also not a threat for making dirty bombs (Daily Wire). Reuters: In 2003 Libya under then-leader Muammar Gaddafi renounced its nuclear weapons program, which had obtained centrifuges that can enrich uranium as well as design information for a nuclear bomb, though it made little progress towards a bomb (Reuters).
