Remembering Congresswoman Pat Schroeder
[[link removed]] We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rep. Pat Shroeder on Sunday night.
Pat Schroeder was an inspiration to generations of women getting into politics. She was an effective and inspiring leader, a legend in Colorado politics.
Rep. Shroeder was the first woman to be elected to Congress in Colorado, she was a pioneer for women’s and family rights in Congress.
Rep. Pat Shroeder was a true trailblazer whose lessons are more important in a post Roe America than ever.
Representatives Patricia Schroeder and Shirley Chisholm talking with students at Manual High School around 1982. (Denver Public Library) Her courage, her intelligence and her wit allowed her to pass crucial legislation despite facing blatant discrimination in Congress.
She helped pass the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which barred employers from dismissing women because they were pregnant and from denying them maternity benefits.
She was a driving force behind the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, which guaranteed women and men up to 18 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a family member.
There were only 14 women in the House when Schroeder arrived in Washington. The Washington Post noted [[link removed]] that several of those members were widows , filling out the terms of their deceased husbands. Pat Schroeder described the institution as “an overaged frat house.”
The congresswoman is widely known for her 1987 announcement that she would not run for president. Such hopes for women candidates, persist today.
In 1977, Schroeder spoke on the Capitol steps at a rally against a ban on the use of federal funds for abortion. She helped to blaze that trail. And we are still fighting the same battles.
During this Women's History Month and beyond we remember and honor the legacy of the first Woman from Colorado to be elected in Congress.
